ICANN approves non-Latin domain names

The organization responsible for managing the assignment of domain names and IP addresses has approved a new plan to allow non-Latin characters in Web extensions.

Known as Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs), the system is designed to globalize the Net so regions around the world can use their own local alphabet characters to surf in cyberspace, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, or ICANN, said Friday.

Calling IDNs the "biggest technical change" to the Internet since its birth 40 years ago, ICANN unanimously approved the plan on the final day of its six-day conference in Seoul.

IDNs will allow domain names to be to be written in native character sets, such as Chinese, Arabic, and Greek. In charge of managing domain names, ICANN has argued that IDNs are necessary to expand use of the Web in regions where people don't understand English. Since its inception, the Internet has been limited to the Latin character set used by the U.S. and many other nations.

Google introduces Google Fast filp news protal

One problem with reading news online today is that browsing can be really slow. A media-rich page loads dozens of files and can take as much as 10 seconds to load over broadband, which can be frustrating. What we need instead is a way to flip through articles really fast without unnatural delays, just as we can in print. The flow should feel seamless and let you rapidly flip forward to the content you like, without the constant wait for things to load. Imagine taking 10 seconds to turn the page of a print magazine!

Fast Flip is a new reading experience that combines the best elements of print and online articles. Like a
print magazine, Fast Flip lets you browse sequentially through bundles of recent news, headlines and popular topics, as well as feeds from individual top publishers. As the name suggests, flipping through content is very fast, so you can quickly look through a lot of pages until you find something interesting. At the same time, we provide aggregation and search over many top newspapers and magazines, and the ability to share content with your friends and community. Fast Flip also personalizes the experience for you, by taking cues from selections you make to show you more content from sources, topics and journalists that you seem to like. In short, you get fast browsing, natural magazine-style navigation, recommendations from friends and other members of the community and a selection of content that is serendipitous and personalized.
To build Google Fast Flip,Google partnered with three dozen top publishers, including the New York Times, the Atlantic, the Washington Post, Salon, Fast Company, ProPublica and Newsweek. These partners will share the revenue earned from contextually relevant ads. This gives publishers an opportunity to introduce new readers to their content. It also tests our theory that being able to read articles faster means people will read more of them, driving more ad revenue to publishers.

The publishing industry faces many challenges today, and there is no magic bullet. Google believes that encouraging readers to read more news is a necessary part of the solution. Fast Flip could be one way to help, and its looking to find other ways to help as well in the near future.

TinEye is a reverse image search engine

What is TinEye?
TinEye is a reverse image search engine. You can submit an image to TinEye to find out where it came from, how it is being used, if modified versions of the image exist, or to find higher resolution versions. TinEye is the first image search engine on the web to use image identification technology rather than keywords, metadata or watermarks. For some real TinEye search examples, check out our Cool Searches page.

How does TinEye work?
When you submit an image to be searched, TinEye creates a unique and compact digital signature or 'fingerprint' for it, then compares this fingerprint to every other image in our index to retrieve matches. TinEye can even find a partial fingerprint match.
TinEye does not typically find similar images (i.e. a different image with the same subject matter); it finds exact matches including those that have been cropped, edited or resized.
Why use TinEye?
There are many uses for TinEye, but here are a few:
Find out where an image came from, or get more information about it
Research or track the appearance of an image online
Find higher resolution versions of an image
Locate web pages that make use of an image you have created
Discover modified or edited versions of an image
For some real examples of TinEye searches, check out our blog or Cool Searches page.
Who created TinEye?
TinEye was created by Idée Inc. Idée develops advanced image identification and visual search software for photo wire agencies, stock photography firms, entertainment media companies and some of the world's leading imaging firms including Adobe Systems Inc.
You can experiment and play with various implementations of Idée's visual search technologies by checking out the Idée Lab!

New ‘Imhalal’ search engine

New ‘halal’ search engine
A new search engine, called ImHalal.com, filters out X-rated Web sites and other content that is “haraam” or forbidden by Islam.
The search technology developed by AZS Media Group, a Dutch Internet company, has a two-layer filter.

Adult sites are blocked outright while other topics that are less dicey, such as “drugs,” “beer” or “pork” are restricted but not as tightly.

Facebook Lite: Same Great Taste, Just Fewer Calories

This week, the popular social networking web site Facebook unveiled a second, more bare-bones version of its namesake called Facebook Lite.

Currently open to United States and India users only, Lite offers basic features like Photos and Events, but does not permit other applications like Chat, Notes and Groups. Other Lite changes include swapping the input box for “Write,” “Post Photos” and “Post Video” tabs and prominently highlighting “Events” in the main toolbar.

“Facebook Lite is designed to introduce people with low bandwidth and those interested in learning more about the site to some of the core features of Facebook, enabling people to share information with their friends quickly and efficiently,” said Facebook’s director of communications, Brandee Barker.

Its intended bandwidth purpose aside, some Facebook users may find the simpler, cleaner (not to mention faster) Lite layout a welcome alternative to the more cluttered design found on its sibling site.
